DDR Projects & {open} present The Works of ALEXA HATANAKA

02/2/2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 4th
6-8pm

Show runs February 4th thru March 25th

DDR Projects is proud to welcome Canadian artist Alexa Hatanaka to {open} on Saturday February 4th, 2012 at 6:00PM for an exhibit of her recent screen printed and hand embellished works done during her recent tour of China.

Alexa Hatanaka is a Toronto native who paints large-scale murals and creates work that is based in material exploration, craft and playful representation. To create her work she employs different combinations of printmaking, weaving and dying, painting, and papermaking. In recent years, her colorful, tactile works have been shown at the Nanjing Arts Institute in China, La Place Forte in Paris, Articulate Baboon in Egypt, and the Manifesto Festival in Toronto. Very close to Alexa’s heart are the public murals she paints in Canada’s Arctic communities. The projects are created in collaboration with NUSchool Design agency, based in Iqaluit, NU, and involve mentorship work with local youth. A large part of her practice is devoted to collaborations with her partner Patrick Thompson, which included three-dimensional installations, outdoor murals, and mixed-media pieces on traditional and unconventional substrates. Alexa is currently completing her thesis in Printmaking at OCAD University, and previously studied for two years in Sheridan College’s BAA Illustration program.

If you would like more information about the artist, this exhibit or to schedule an interview, please call John Geldbach at 562.673.3134 or email John at john@ddrprojects.com

Wild Pack of Canaries: The Coroner Can Wait

12/14/2011

Wild Pack of Canaries “The Coroner Can Wait” CD

Wild Pack makes the kind of music fit for the attentive ear, packing in layers of horns, chirping birds, mathy time signatures and oscillating reverb into surprising song progressions that work on a weird, cosmic level. De Anda’s vocals have a distinct honesty that makes you want to believe yes, these are real musicians making real music because they love it and they want to reward anyone else courteous enough to listen.

Mindy Nettifee’s Rise of the Trust Fall

06/29/2011

Rise of the Trust Fall by Mindy Nettifee // published by Write Bloody

The poems in Mindy Nettifee’s second book, Rise of the Trust Fall, possess a magic that can only come from a seasoned writer willing to share more on the page than she’s comfortable with. Whether exploring the strange alchemy of healing, the perils of self-actualization, or the contemporary experience of womanhood, the poems in this daring collection are gorgeous and vibrant, bitingly funny, and unflinchingly honest. Rise of the Trust Fall challenges more than our understanding of ourselves. It calls us to connect to our humanity, to celebrate its flaws, and then to demand more of it, in every well crafted line.

Synopsis:

“Mindy Nettifee’s Rise of The Trust Fall is an intimate cartography of the poet that is at once lush with emotion and sharp with a bright, raw edge. This beautiful collection of poems will make you rise, rise up.” – PANK Magazine

“Mindy Nettifee poems inspire and fulfill. Rise of the Trust Fall has become a necessary book for me.” -Beau Sia, Def Poetry Jam On Broadway

“Mindy Nettifee is destined to be the next Dorothy Parker.” -Poetic Diversity

Korey Dane’s Loomer

06/29/2011

Loomer is Korey Dane’s follow-up full length to the acclaimed “For the Kite Flyers” EP.

Korey Dane hails from Long Beach, California and plays a blend of acoustic driven songs with powerful vocals and engaging lyrics.  He has a familiar, classic feel, yet are refreshingly new.  Think of it like you poured yourself a drink and dusted off an old 45 to find a lost record nobody has heard before.  Led by singer/songwriter Korey Dane, this six-piece band also includes the charming voice of Tess Shapiro, Alex Medina, John Garbutt, Tyler Juarez, and David Beltran.  Korey and Tess are both great vocalists who combine so naturally that it’s hard to ignore their obvious chemistry.  Korey also has a real knack for songwriting, reminiscent of some artists who wouldn’t be fair to mention because he could give them a run for their money. - Ian Lewis

July 23: Blaine Fontana book release event

06/24/2011

Event begins at 7pm. Stay tuned for more details.

Join us in welcoming back our great friend and amazing artist, Mr. Blaine Fontana, for the book release event for…
AMALGAMATE

From ZERO+ Publishing:

AMALGAMATE surveys the richly detailed, highly imaginative world of Blaine Fontana. Imbuing his vision with the divine symbolism of religious myths, worldly folklore and current social dynamics, his works contain a kind of shamanic exploration of meaning that recognizes the totemic quality and power of the image.
