In June 2007, Kim Bogardus moved to the rural Mongolian town of Erdenet as a member of the peace corps. There, Kim taught a photography class for a small group of children.

Though they had never taken an art class before, her students captured their unique perspective of life in a developing country, unconsciously illustrating the tenuous balance that exists between tradition and the influence of modernity.

Kim returned to the U.S. in July 2009, bringing her students’ work with her, both to showcase life in Mongolia and to hopefully help her students through the sale of their artwork.

***

100% of the proceeds from each piece will be given to the artist.

100% of sales will be given to the artist.

A collection of collaborative collages from artists Rebecca Trawick and David Wallace. May 30 - July 19, 2009

{open} is pleased to showcase a collection of collaborative collages from artists Rebecca Trawick and David Wallace.

During a two-year collaboration, Trawick and Wallace traded pieces back and forth via the US Post Office, adding to each work as it changed hands.

Wallace, who lives in Pittsburgh, and Trawick, who lives in Southern California, never met throughout their collaborative process. Their first contact was via an email Wallace wrote Trawick after seeing some of her collages in a gallery. Rebecca was immediately struck by David’s work and within a few months David approached Rebecca about doing a collage collaboration. The two artists first met at a Hand to Hand exhibition opening in St. Louis in 2007.

{open} will be exhibiting 25 of the works, along with thumbnails documenting each step of the collaborative process.

Hand to Hand
the coast-to-coast collage collaboration of Rebecca Trawick and David Wallace
opening reception – Saturday, May 30, 6-9 p.m.

show runs Saturday, May 30 – Sunday, July 19, 2009

About the artists

David Wallace is a collage artist, graphic designer and musician living in Pittsburgh. He’s been making art for “as long as he can remember” but found an obsession with the collage process about 10 years ago. The narrative that found materials create when juxtaposed together in the same composition drives Wallace’s collaged works of art. He creates new realities and new stories out of found materials. David has shown his collages, paintings and installations at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh; Gallery Neptune in Bethesda, MD; Michael Orr Gallery in Columbus, OH; Boogaloo in Brooklyn, NY; and A Muse Gallery in Columbus, OH, among others. He is also currently performing with Pittsburgh’s internationally touring Squonk Opera. See David’s artwork online at www.salaczar.com.

Rebecca Trawick has been working as a collage artist and calligrapher since her days as a poor art student in Minneapolis, MN. Vintage ephemera have become an obsession for her – finding the perfect piece of paper, a photo, a button or image is her goal. She is also obsessed with letter-writing, handwriting, mail art and the art of correspondence. She has shown at Blue Ruin Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA; Galleria D’arte Modern E Contemporanea, Bondeno, Italy; Treehouse Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, among others. Her lettering and illustration have been featured in Somerset Studios, ME’s Home Companion, Bust magazine, Lollipop magazine, Garage Magazine and many others. You can see Rebecca’s work online at www.bluebirdstudios.com.

Robert Pokorny is a secret Long Beach legend: Though some may not know his name, most are familiar with his work. …

As the primary illustrator of the instore show posters for beloved Long Beach music store Fingerprints, Robert Pokorny’s conceptualized visions of independent music icons—running the gamut from Sonic Youth to Jack Johnson—have been collected by music lovers for more than a decade.

Pokorny’s work in the music industry has included everything from gig posters and cd covers to big name clients like Capitol Records and EMI, but his portfolio extends far beyond the realm of rock and roll. Pokorny’s paintings and illustrations have been featured in contemporary galleries from LA to Las Vegas and earned him recognition from groups like the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, who recently included two of his pieces in their limited edition Illustration West 45 book showcasing the best of contemporary illustration from throughout the U.S.

Pokorny’s latest series, Transitions, reflects on the constant state of movement that links individual moments in time, each piece capturing its subject in the midst of that transitional state. Drawing inspiration from a variety of unexpected sources, including the covers of old jazz albums, Pokorny blends the figure abstractions of modern and post-modern art with his keen eye for contemporary culture.

Pokorny also has a keen eye for color, which is readily apparent throughout Transitions, emphasized by his choice to paint with Cel-Vinyl, a vinyl-acrylic copolymer normally used for animation. The result is a strikingly bold palette with a clean, crisp line that is the perfect complement to the compelling characters Pokorny has created.

Transitions is Pokorny’s first exhibition at {open}, though his work is a favorite of {open} co-owners Sé Reed and Shea Gauer. Reed met Pokorny in 2006 when interviewing him for a local publication, but she had already been introduced to his work by Gauer, who papered the bookstore’s backroom with a collection of Fingerprint’s posters, most of which were Pokorny’s.

“We’re delighted to feature Robert’s work,” said Reed. “Both Shea and I have long admired his style, but it was worth the wait. We’re both still stunned by the beauty of this latest series.”

From his bio …

The characters and subject matter in his paintings often tell some arcane and dark story, which is expressed through steady-handed intricate line work. Through layering of vivid color, he narrates the intriguing and amusing tales of seemingly pain-stricken, weathered, and worn individuals.

Last Saturday turned out to be a successful art night for Fourth Street’s “Retro Row.” Throngs of artists, musicians, gallerists and the public-at-large took part in an evening filled with art, entertainment, food, drink and dance.

First on the list was Open. Their latest exhibit, “Sound!” displays works by Andy Carey, who interprets the sonic landscape of music through paintings. Carey’s works visually depict sound through geometrically abstract displays of painted discs positioned side-by-side. Each pattern uses a different color to convey a unique mood, which is akin to what music does.

“Musical sounds can evoke certain emotions, but I have always been in awe of how it can create color and form in my mind’s eye,” Carey said.

Carey’s works depict the tonal quality of the singing voice, but the work itself is absent of any lyrical influence. Apparently, each piece was created with a certain question in mind: What does the artist visualize for each sound?

The works are fun, colorful and lyrical in the sense that they force the eye to move about the “canvas” with ease. If you need a visual, imagine “Lite Brite” where colored pegs are used to create varying shapes and moods.

The show ends July 20.

Marleah Tobin’s work is unplanned, unchoregraphed and unscripted, what she calls “a left-hand path to digitization.”

Her goal is to capture an image as it happens, “the way your youth was captured. Tangible, visceral, but simultaneously dreamlike.Things immortalized not as they necessarily looked, but how you felt and how you’ll remember them. Instant film is dying, obsolete. but warmer and more expressive than pixels, it’s the stuff that grabs your heart.

“Camera Eye” will open with a reception, including DJs and light refreshments, from 6 to 9 pm. The reception is being held in conjunction with Last Saturdays, 4th Street’s new bi-monthly art night, which will feature art receptions in numerous shops along the street.
