Other People’s Poetry (OPP): a bi-monthly poetry series
saturday, april 19 // 7-9pm (signups at 6pm) // free
It’s back! {open}’s newest series, Other People’s Poetry (OPP), was exceedingly well received in its debut, and we’re quite looking forward to the second event!
OPP was inspired by the idea that poetry is best read out loud, blended with the desire to explore spoken word of all genres. With the emphasis placed on the reading of work by authors other than the reader, OPP has the nifty effect of allowing the work itself to take center stage.
Here’s how to get down with this OPP: You can read anything you like—poems, passages, plays, letters, speeches—as long as it was not written by you. You are free to read them as you wish. You or someone else may accompany the reading with an instrument, though a primary portion of the pieces must be spoken (i.e. not sung).
The limit is five minutes or five individual pieces, whichever comes first. Extra time evaporates into thin air, and as such it’s non-transferable. Overtime is non-existent, so if you think you might go over, read faster!
Sign-ups will begin at 6pm. Readings will start promptly at 7pm. At 8pm or thereabout, we’ll take a short intermission, after which the readings will start back up. Sign-ups will continue as time permits; you can sign-up to read again after completing your first reading.

“Long Beach Art Deco” Book Signing
Just released by Arcadia Publishing, ‘Long Beach Art Deco’ celebrates, in both word and image, the Long Beach that rose from the rubble of the 1933 earthquake to become a premier Art Deco city. Authors Suzanne Tarbell Cooper and John W. Thomas are board members of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. J. Christopher Launi is a local photographer with an extensive collection of architectural photographs. In addition to these images, the authors were able to draw upon the archives of the Long Beach Library, the Long Beach Historical Society, and Long Beach Heritage, among others, to present a remarkable look at the Art Deco treasures of this community.
**Come down and meet the authors and pick up a signed copy of this beautiful book.
