A short FAQ on how to submit your work for consideration.
- Book/chapbook/zine
- Album/cd/record
- Prints, buttons, t-shirts, other art-based merchandise
- Exhibiting art
- Screening films
- Performing
Q: Will you sell my book/chapbook/zine?
A: We carry a wide-selection of independent publications, including books, zines and chapbooks. We will carry three copies of independent publications that meet our publication criteria for a trial period of four months on a consignment basis.
After four months, we usually will either buy copies wholesale, keep one copy on-hand on a consignment basis or return your work to you.
If you are a independent imprint and you’d like us to carry more than one of your titles, please email us.
Q: What about my album/cd/record?
A: Please send us samples of or links to your music. MySpace pages are fine … please specify which songs are on the album you’re promoting. If you have music on your website, please give us the direct link to your music so we don’t have to click around.
Please note, our music selection is intentionally limited, so that we can accomodate the diverse range of styles, genres and instruments reflected in our in-store performances. Not all music will be approved. If you’re curious if your music would fit in, please come to a few of our shows or visit our music page to check out the musicians we feature.
Q: I make prints, buttons, t-shirts or other art-based merchandise that I’d like {open} to carry.
A: Please send a complete description, including low-res pictures, of your merchandise or a link to your website (etsy profiles are great!) to open@thestoryofopen.com. Please note, not all work will be accepted.
Q: I’d like to be considered for an art show at {open}
A:We open a new art show on the Last Saturday of every-other month. We exhibit a range of media and styles, from illustration/urban progressive to abstract/conceptual. We have an on-going call to artists for future solo and group show consideration.
Submissions are accepted digitally ONLY, please do not bring your work into the store. Email open@thestoryofopen.com at least five low-res images of the work you are submitting for consideration and a brief description of the work, either individually or as a whole. Additionally, please indicate when and where any work that you are submitting for consideration has been previously exhibited (including student exhibitions).
Please note, we are usually booked at least year in advance. We consider all submissions, but cannot reply individually to each inquiry. If at any time we feel your work would fit well at {open}, either as a solo or group show, we will contact you.
Q: I’d like to perform at {open}, how can I go about that?
A: {open} is a unique performance space. We feature only a handful of music events each month and we strive to present a diverse range of styles, genres and instruments. We are always looking for incredible and unique music to feature in our in-store performances.
Please send us samples of or links to your music. MySpace pages are fine but you must specify which songs are indicative of your current work. If you have music on your website, please give us the direct link to your music, indicating which songs are indicative of your current work. Please include a list of Long Beach venues/shows you have played in the past or will be playing in the future, two months in either direction.
We are particularly interested in:
- creating a show that pulls from multiple media
- small labels looking to present a cohesive arrangement of performers
- musicians on small, independent tours from out of the LA area
- local musicians to open for touring performers
A note about performing at {open}: Our roster is extremely limited. Not all those who inquire will be booked. We consider all submissions, but cannot reply individually to each inquiry. Even if we do not contact you for a booking immediately, we will keep your information on hand, so please keep us updated with new projects and lineup changes.
